Scanning

How are scans delivered to me?

All scans are delivered to the email provided in your order. For multi-format orders, expect multiple email notifications as more film is uploaded.

What makes a Gelatin Labs film scan so special?

Gelatin Labs is putting creative control back into your hands. Our film scans will have a flexible tonal range, which means that highlights, midtones and shadows are preserved. This makes editing a breeze.

I have already developed negatives. Can you scan them?

If you have negatives that are already developed, you can send those to us for scanning. Select "Developed Film" as your film type when ordering.

What equipment do you use to scan my film?

We use a Noritsu HS-1800 autofeed scanner running EZ Controller.

What are your turnaround times for scans?

Refer to the top of our homepage for latest turnaround times. Please note that we are closed on weekends - weekdays count as business days. We are open M-F from 9am-5pm.

Can you scan with film borders included?

While we cannot offer full rebate scans that show your borders, add a Contact Sheet scan to your film order to receive a full page scan of your roll, with borders included. The resolution will blow your mind, allowing cropping for social media usage.

What resolution are your scans?

Standard: approx. 34MB ~ 3024 x 2005 TIFF scans (16 bits/channel) @96ppi, Upgrade: approx. 174MB ~ 6774×4492 TIFF scans (16 bits/channel) @96ppi. File dimensions and sizes vary based on format.

Can you scan Half-Frame or Panoramic film?

Yes. And at no extra upcharge! No selection needed, we can recognize these rolls right away.

How long do my scans remain accessible from my download link?

From the day you receive your scans via email, we keep your files safe and uploaded for at least 3 months. After 3 months, your files may be deleted to clear more space on our server, based on our routine storage maintenance. Download your scans right away to avoid losing access, and opt to have your negatives returned for the ultimate backup solution.

How do I drop off my film?

1. Place your film order on gelatinlabs.com – select ‘Return Shipping’ at checkout’ to get negatives returned (and prints, if you ordered them).

2. Envelopes for your order are provided over the counter. Write your name and order number, and load film rolls inside.

3. Hand over your envelope to a Knickerbocker team member.

Your film will head to Gelatin Labs every Monday and Thursday!

How do I drop-off my film?

1. At the front entrance, buzz in to be let inside.

2. The Gelatin drop-off box is directly across from the front desk. Place your order via the QR code on the box. Select ‘Ship Negatives’ to get negatives (and prints, if you ordered them) returned.

3. Take an envelope (or your own ziploc) from the front desk, bag up your film, and write your order number. Your film will head to Gelatin Labs!

Turnarounds

At Gelatin Labs, quality is our main priority for every order. Our team keeps film moving through the lab as efficiently as possible, but estimates are not guaranteed. 

Current FLEXIBLE TURNAROUND Estimates:

Order size and options chosen affect turnaround time.

Small orders (3 rolls or less) with fewer options (up to Pro Level scans) take less time. Larger orders (4 rolls or more) with more options (including SuperPro scans) will take longer.

Contact Sheet

  • A contact sheet is a photographic overview of your entire film roll. First, we cut and sleeve your roll in PrintFile sleeving.

    We scan the entire sleeved roll with a high resolution flatbed scanner. This hi-res, single-image overview allows you to quickly view and assess all photos for easy selection and sharing.
