Portra is far happier overexposed than underexposed. When in doubt, give it more light. Development and scanning are purchased separately.
The one people mean by film colour.
Kodak Portra 400 in 120 is the most requested colour negative film in our lab, and the medium format version is where it genuinely shines. This is a single roll, rated at ISO 400.
Portra was designed around skin, and it shows. Highlights roll off gently instead of clipping, contrast stays soft, and colour is warm and natural rather than saturated. On a 120 negative the grain is very fine and the tonal transitions are smooth in a way 35mm cannot quite match.
Its other superpower is latitude. Portra 400 tolerates being overexposed by two or three stops and often looks better for it, which is why so many photographers rate it at 200 and shoot in bright sun. Weddings, portraits, editorial, travel. It handles all of it.
