Tabular grain films are more sensitive to exposure and development than classic emulsions. Meter carefully. Development and scanning are purchased separately.
HP5 speed, much finer grain.
Ilford Delta 400 is the modern counterpart to HP5 Plus. Same nominal speed, completely different emulsion. Where HP5 uses traditional cubic grain, Delta uses flat tabular crystals, and the result is a 400 speed black and white film that looks considerably cleaner.
Grain is noticeably finer, edges are sharper, and the tonal scale is long and smooth rather than punchy. If HP5 Plus and Tri-X read as classic and textured, Delta 400 reads as precise and contemporary.
The cost of that refinement is a little less latitude. Delta rewards accurate metering and consistent development more than the traditional emulsions do. Use it for portraits where you want detail rather than grit, for architecture, and for anything you plan to print large.
