The Best Film Scans in The Biz

Crafted with intention. Delivered with consistency. Get scans you love, every time.
Photographer: Jakob Lilja-Ruiz

At Gelatin Labs, we believe scanning film should feel as thoughtful and intentional as shooting it.

What sets us apart? It starts with our friendly, detail-driven team who treat every roll like it matters — because it does. We develop film with precision and scan using industry-trusted Noritsu and Fujifilm Frontier equipment to bring out the best in every shot.

Our automated status system keeps you in the loop from start to finish, and your scans arrive beautifully organized with labeled folders and any notes you shared.

And then there’s GelForm — our signature scan system that lets you pick a look you’ll love. Instead of navigating confusing preferences, you simply select from curated, photographer-tested styles that match your aesthetic. We handle the rest.

Your Friends Will Be Gel-ous

Film is personal, and your scans should reflect that.

Enter: GelForm — to make getting the look you want from your scans simple.

Instead of asking you to describe how you want your scans to feel, we’ve built a lineup of curated styles — each one with a clear name, mood and purpose. Whether you want something soft and neutral, bold and punchy, or cool and nostalgic, there’s a GelForm for it.

GelForm takes the guesswork out and puts creative control back in your hands. You don’t have to be a pro to get great scans — just choose the style that feels right for you.

Style Dialed-in

We created GelForm to bring clarity, control, and quality to every scan.

Repeatable results — Sending us the same kind of film often? Get the same quality scans each time.

Intentional tone and contrast — Each GelForm has a defined tonal profile built for specific creative goals.

More confidence in post — Whether you edit your scans or not, GelForm makes them easier to work with.

It Starts With The Team

From the team members that open your packages to the ones that ship them out the door, we are a group of photography enthusiasts and film lovers. Every step is handled by someone who understands what makes a great frame. We don’t just develop and scan — we evaluate, we adjust, and we care.

Expect consistent results, personal customer service, thoughtful scans, and a crew that takes pride in getting it right.

Good Negatives Make a Positive

Our film processing standards are as high as our scanning ones. We use trusted chemistries, precise time and temperature controls, and expert handling from start to finish.

C-41, Black + White, and E-6 are all processed in-house. ECN-2 is processed by Kodak Atlanta’s true cinema lab. We treat every roll with attention to detail that matches your intention behind the shot.

We've Got The Gear

We develop using:

Colenta Roller Transport — Known for its temperature accuracy, archival wash stage, and ability to process film sizes from 110 to 8×10 sheet film.

Noritsu V-50 and V-30 — Easy to maintain roller transport processors, allowing our lab to move through large volumes of film quickly, without any sacrifice to quality.

dev.a Rotary Processor — A modern processor primarily used for E-6 and Black + White processes. Full customization for different film stocks and chemistry.

We scan using:

Noritsu HS-1800 — Known for its sharpness, dynamic range, and detail retention.

Fujifilm Frontier — Beloved for its glow, softness, and nuanced tonal blending.

Some GelForms are tuned to perform best on one scanner type or the other, based on what brings out the best in your film.

Behind the Scans...

Keeping You Updated

Our film processing standards are as high as our scanning ones. We use trusted chemistries, precise time and temperature controls, and expert handling from start to finish.

C-41, Black + White, and E-6 are all processed in-house. ECN-2 is processed by Kodak Atlanta’s true cinema lab. We treat every roll with attention to detail that matches your intention behind the shot.

Easy File Delivery

Your scans arrive via a simple download link to your email, also available from your account for 30 days.

Staying Organized

Each roll you send will be separated into a unique folder in your digital download link. Any roll notes you made will carry over to the folder. Your folder will be labeled with a number, called a twincheck, that Gelatin uses to keep track of your film in the lab.

More Bits, More Fun

When it comes to the quality of your scans, more bits the better. We only deliver your scans at our highest available output of color depth. Our color scans will be delivered at 16 bits/channel for all Classic GelForms.

Get to The Grain

Choose between our Casual, Pro, Pro Plus and SuperPro scan sizes for an increasing scale of file size, type, and resolution (see specifics on our ordering page).

.TIFF vs .JPEG

With our Pro, Pro Plus and SuperPro scan levels, your images are delivered to you in an uncompressed .TIFF file format.

Compared to the .JPEG format used exclusively by most labs, which strips your image of important data and color information, .TIFF stores everything the scanner sees. This allows for maximum editing capability, if you wish to make your own adjustments.

If you don’t need the extra firepower, opt for our Casual scan level to receive high quality .JPEG images.

A GelForm is a thoughtfully crafted balance of temperature and contrast—bundling them into distinct looks that are both intuitive and reliable. Whether you prefer a clean, true-to-film rendering, a punchy high-contrast feel, or something with a bit more warmth or coolness, there’s a GelForm that fits your style.

We’ve created a set of unique formulas (GelForms) that unlock endless possibilities—making your photos more personal and distinctive. These are not presets, but in-scanner adjustments to get the best from your film.

HOW IT WORKS

Choose the GelForm that best fits your style and application – we apply carefully tuned formulas based on contrast and temperature. For specialty GelForms, we can also preserve details like sprockets or the rebate edge.

Each formula is unique and will render a different result. Explore the possibilities of your images by experimenting with each GelForm. (Note: Results may vary from sample images, and depend on the film stock chosen, exposure settings while shooting, and film storage).

SCANNER INFO

Each GelForm is made possible by professional film scanners that evoke different styles. To understand which GelForm relates to each scanner, refer to the table below.
